CCTV Redaction Services
We have all heard a lot about GDPR compliance. One of the main deliverables within the current EU and UK agreement is that a third party can request access to their data which includes CCTV footage.
Your responsibilities as a CCTV operator
If you operate a business and use CCTV on or off your premises then you need to ensure that you are GDPR compliant.
If an incident occurs within company premises and a client or employee makes a formal complaint then CCTV is often used as evidence.
DSAR
The individual or individuals in question can make a Data Subject Access Request or DSAR and it is your responsibility to handle this request by responding within 30 days. The issue with this is that there are likely to be other individuals captured on the CCTV and they need to be redacted before a copy is handed over.
So what is redaction and how can we help facilitate this.
Redaction is the blurring, pixelation or blocking of individuals or groups so they can no longer be identified other than the main parties involved, as people move about in the scene the redactions need to be tracked as the individuals enter, leave and move around.
As this data has to be supplied free of charge the burden of the cost falls to the company or owner of the CCTV system.
Companies will often outsource this redaction work to a third party such as ours.
The cost to redact video footage depends upon two main factors.
- The duration of the footage in question and number of camera views.
- The number of individuals within each video segment that need redacting
If the footage is of a poor quality then blurring of the faces is usually enough, for higher quality video it may be required to blur the whole person so they can’t be identified by their clothing or any other means.
We would always recommend seeking advice from a specialist video redaction company such as ours if you are unsure about compliance when a DSAR has been made.
