Mag Film Audio to Digital Transfers
A sound transfer service for mag film – Magnetic full coat or striped audio.
We can digitise both 16mm and 35mm up to 3 channels of sound.
For sprocketed 16mm or 35mm mono, stereo and 3 track (centre or edge) digitising. Our MAGNA-TECH reproducer sound follower is fitted with the absolute best pre-amps for unrivalled audio reproduction.
We export to digital audio files which can be downloaded from the cloud via a private link.
Digital audio is typically supplied at 48 kHz 24-bit broadcast WAV files.
Sprocketed Audio Reels
24 or 25 frames per second playback in single or 2 x reel speeds.
This is often known as SepMag or separate magnetic easily identified as it generally has light brown coating of magnetic media over the entire surface of sprocketed reels. Both 16mm centre track and edge track can be transferred as well as 35mm 3 channel. These are usually paired with the associated film reel.
Sound to Picture Sync
With the advent of digital production it is relatively straightforward to combine the sound and pictures. First we scan the films frame by frame to create high quality high definition image file up to 4K full aperture. We play out the mag film audio and record to digital broadcast quality WAV file. Using an NLE we then sync the 2 together and export out in a range of digital edit, archive and playback formats.
Additional work can also be carried out on the audio files such as sibilance reduction, hum noise and other issues can be fixed or improved using a range of advanced and AI plugins.
Mag Film audio to digital transfers
With the relative speed and size of the tracks across the heads a reproducer is capable of very high audio quality.
Combined Audio Formats
We can also transfer 16mm soundtracks that are combined within the film known as ComMag and ComOpt optical at 18 fps or 24 fps. ComMag film has an attached magnetic strip running along the edge of the film.
ComOpt has an optical track running along the edge of the film, we read this using a software tool which views the DPX sequence and extracts the audio file from the scanned images.
Other Audio Formats
We can also transfer 1/4” reel to reel tapes and audio cassettes.
