DVD recordings of family events such as weddings, christenings school plays were very neat and provided one of the first useful digital home formats. Mini DVD camcorders were invented to record directly to this format on smaller sized discs. This format is now becoming extinct, it is true that these recordable discs don’t last forever so it is wise to think about getting them transferred to a more stable format that can be easily copied and saved. DVD to USB in an easy to use format at a cost that won’t break the bank and can cost less than the software to do it yourself!
Family History
Recordings can include significant family events such as weddings, holidays, nativities so preserving them into a modern digital file that can be easily copied and backed up makes sense. It’s true that DVD recordings won’t last forever.
These days many of us are ditching these old under the set players as they are now faulty or bulky and let’s face it we are consuming most of our content using streaming services such as Netflix. What happened to Blockbusters ;)
Transfer from DVD – It’s all about data extraction.
So how do you get the recordings of a disc? It can be tricky, there are USB dongles that will allow you to copy the discs as they play but these provide very poor results. The main reason is that they are using a converted composite video signal so you get a loss as this is then re-converted on the fly back into a digital video file, usually a very compressed one.
The other way is to use software to extract the discs digital information. This is the best method by can be very time consuming and may not always work, it needs some experimenting. Of course you can always send them to a reputable company such as ours and we can do the job for you.
You might want to also save the time and effort of trying to do this yourself, we have decades of experience with the format having authored hundreds of disc masters and duplicated many hundreds of thousands of discs. So we have an in-depth knowledge of the format.
We are able to extract the recordings of the disc and convert them into a modern MP4 format compatible with all modern smart TVs PC/MAC and online streaming platforms such as YouTube. But importantly without losing the quality of the original as we keep everything in the digital domain.
DVD to USB
A popular way is to have them put onto a modern USB pen drive which you simply just plug into your smart TV for ease of use. Files can also be uploaded to popular online platforms for streaming playback.
Data Recovery
Even discs that won’t play anymore can in many instances be saved, we have a raft of software tools that will extract the data off the discs, even badly scratched discs can be restored by re-surfacing and then extracting the data files pictures or video.
