What the format offers,

The HD DVD is an extension of the DVD optical disc format. HD DVD disks store substantially more data than conventional DVD's due to the use of a blue-violet laser with shorter wavelength at 650-nm. The Capacity is around 15 gigabytes which is less than the Blu-Ray version. This format promises to offer cheaper replication costs due to the fact that there is minimal cost to convert the machines to replicate these types of disks.

Blu-ray disks also use a blue laser, and offer 25 Gb capacity per layer There are two types of single-sided HD DVD discs for content playback: the 15GB single-layer disc, and the dual-layer disc with 30GB capacity.

Both Blu-ray & HD DVD offer much greater resolution, a growing requirement as screen sizes increase beyond 32”

DVD and HD DVD share the same basic disc structure: back-to-back bonding of two 120mm diameter substrates, each 0.6mm thick. As a result, HD DVD has the advantage of backward compatibility and cost effective for both the hard wear and disk manufacturing.
